Caring for Your Wellington Boots

ith regular care, your wellington boots will remain comfortable, supple and ready for many seasons outdoors.

Clean after wear

Rinse away mud with cool or lukewarm water, then use a soft cloth or brush to remove any remaining dirt. For stubborn marks, use a small amount of mild soapy water.

Avoid harsh detergents, solvents and stiff brushes, as these may damage the rubber’s finish.

Dry naturally

Allow your boots to dry at room temperature, away from radiators, fires and direct sunlight. Excessive heat can cause natural rubber to dry out, fade or crack.

If the lining becomes wet, remove the insoles where possible and leave the boots open to air. Do not tumble dry.

Condition the rubber

Occasionally apply a product designed specifically for natural-rubber footwear. This helps preserve flexibility and restore the finish. Always follow the product instructions and test it on a discreet area first.

A pale, powdery film may sometimes appear on natural rubber. This is known as blooming and does not affect the boots’ performance. It can usually be removed with a suitable rubber-care product.

Look after fastenings

Remove dirt from buckles, straps and zips with a soft cloth. If your boots have a zip, keep it clean and avoid forcing it when muddy or obstructed.

Store them correctly

Store your boots upright in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place. Keep them away from prolonged direct sunlight, frost and sources of heat. Boot shapers or loosely rolled paper can help tall styles retain their shape.

Always ensure your boots are clean and completely dry before putting them away.
